The Retrogrades are an indie rock band from Concord MA, who believe that there is value in solid introspective pop songs delivered with emotion and balls. Influences range from The Beatles to Radiohead from The Shins to Wolf Parade from Stevie Wonder to Mazarin but the music escapes mere derivation and finds a comfortable niche all its own.
The Retrogrades first formed in 2003 he summer of 2003. Guitarist Sam Lowney and drummer Thomas Abend started a garage band and enlisted the help of guitarist, Ben Brewer. One day in late August of 2003, Ben's brother Alex Brewer joined Ben and Thomas to sing on one of the songs they had written (which would eventually become Nebulan 6). Ben, who had previously thought of the group as his "all the songs not good enough for my other band" group, became more interested in the Retrogrades. After Lowney left, the band began writing an album’s worth of material, slowly getting better at writing, recording, and playing music. The band met Marshall Frye at an open mic performance, and enlisted him to play keyboard with them but he too eventually left the group. Jim Pearse joined on Bass in winter of 2005 and soon after the band released their first full-length cd "Artificial People." After following up the release with a smattering of shows the Retrogrades spent the summer of 2005 making several attempts to begin writing/recording a follow up cd but after "smoke filled house" was written in october of 05 they scrapped the earlier songs and started fresh recording the songs that would become their follow up EP release "MIU?" which was released in August of 2006. The Retrogrades are continuing to write, play and love music and it is only a matter of time before they are wrapping up production on their next effort.
